SUMMARY:Dog Day Afternoon
DESCRIPTION:Click Here to learn more about how the Incite Foundation helps non-profit arts organizations in Hamilton like The Westdale. \nPart of our Ride or Die Cinema series! \nSchedule*:\n7:00pm – Introduction to the film by host Jeffrey Bender\n7:15pm – Film screening\n9:25pm – Post-film presentation and discussion\n10:00pm – Event concludes\n \n*Times are approximate.  \nBased on the true story of a 1972 Brooklyn bank robbery that went awry\, Sidney Lumet‘s Oscar-winning drama chronicles a truly unique New York City story that takes place on one hot\, summer afternoon. Unlikely burglars Sonny and Sal (Al Pacino and John Cazale) attempt at thievery goes wrong from the get-go\, starting with the fact the bank they choose to rob has almost no money. Things go from bad to worse as tensions rapidly escalate into a hostage situation and stand-off with the police. As Sonny’s motives for the robbery are slowly revealed and things become far more complicated\, the heist turns into a volatile media circus.\n \n \nJeffrey Bender \nJeffrey Bender has hosted a number of in-person and online Film Talks with the Westdale\, most recently ‘The Ol’ Razzle-Dazzle: The Evolution of the Movie Musical’\, featuring six landmark musicals that changed the way we see and think about song and dance through the cinematic lens. He joins us this summer to host ‘Ride or Die Cinema’\, featuring three dynamic pairs of protagonists who find themselves at the centre of cinema’s wildest tales\, and who discover loyalty\, humour and solace in each other as they struggle against the world.

SUMMARY:Cast Aside the Clouds
DESCRIPTION:Special Q+A screening with writer-director Mary Darling and additional cast and crew! \nJoin us at The Westdale in Hamilton for a special screening of Cast Aside the Clouds\, a moving feature film about love\, faith\, courage and the power finding the truth for yourself. \nSet against the turbulent landscape of contemporary Iran\, the film follows Layla Khosravi\, a courageous young Bahá’í woman\, and Dr. Sasan Naderi\, a Muslim surgeon from a conservative family. After an attack on Layla’s father’s bookstore brings them together\, their unexpected connection grows into a love that challenges inherited assumptions and crosses the boundaries society has placed between them. When Layla’s pursuit of education puts her freedom (and her life) at risk\, both must decide what they are willing to stand for. \nDirected by Hamilton local\, Mary Darling\, and filmed in Greece (with authentic footage captured on the streets of Tehran) Cast Aside the Clouds offers a deeply human portrait of a culture too often reduced to headlines. Its evocative soundscape and Persian-inspired score illuminate a story of persecution and perseverance while honouring those who resist erasure with dignity\, compassion and hope. \nMore than a love story\, the film invites us to question inherited beliefs\, investigate truth for ourselves and recognize our shared humanity. \nSpecial Event Pricing in effect \nTickets: Adults $30\, Students $25 (all taxes and fees included)

Isolated\, he is confronted with a series of mysterious crimes that shatter the fragile order of his court\, plunging the fortress into fear and suspicion. With Oda’s army closing in and a traitor hiding among his ranks\, Murashige is forced into an uneasy alliance with Kanbei Kuroda (Masaki Suda)\, a brilliant yet dangerous strategist held prisoner in the dungeon. Helped by his wife Chiyoho (Yuriko Yoshitaka) and his most loyal generals\, Murashige must uncover the truth before the castle falls. \nPresented in Japanese with English subtitles. \nRyan Ferguson \nRyan Ferguson is a film programmer and musician based in Hamilton\, ON. He was the lead programmer of the AGH Film Festival between 2014 and 2021 and is the former Curator of Film at the Art Gallery of Hamilton. SUMMARY:Wings of Desire
DESCRIPTION:Click Here to learn more about how the Incite Foundation helps non-profit arts organizations in Hamilton like The Westdale. \nPart of Great Beyonds: The Afterlife on Film film talk series! \nJoin Jeffrey Bender as he shuffles off this mortal coil and into the realm of the fantastic\, the celestial and the downright absurd\, in this four-film series exploring cinematic conceptions of the afterlife from a variety of styles\, genres and perspectives across film history. It’s everything you wanted to know about the hereafter\, but were afraid to ask… all on our big-screen! \nWings of Desire is one of cinema’s loveliest city symphonies. Bruno Ganz is Damiel\, an angel perched atop buildings high over Berlin who can hear the thoughts – fears\, hopes\, dreams – of all the people living below. But when he falls in love with a beautiful trapeze artist\, he is willing to give up his immortality and come back to earth to be with her. Made not long before the fall of the Berlin wall\, this stunning tapestry of sounds and images\, shot in black and white and color by the legendary Henri Alekan\, is movie poetry. And it forever made the name Wim Wenders synonymous with film art. \nPresented in German with English subtitles. \n \nJeffrey Bender \nJeffrey Bender has hosted a number of in-person and online Film Talks with the Westdale\, most recently ‘Ride or Die Cinema’. He joins us this fall to host the ‘Great Beyonds: The Afterlife on Film’\, featuring four essential explorations into the afterlife as interpreted throughout film history\, as well as serving as one of the guest speakers for Noirvember\, featuring a survey of classic and contemporary film noir.

SUMMARY:Saving Face
DESCRIPTION:Part of our Rainbow Reels Film Talk Series! \nA queer romantic comedy set in vibrant\, multicultural New York City\, Alice Wu’s irresistible feature debut breathed fresh life into the genre by combining snappy dialogue and a swooning love story with a poignant narrative about a mother and daughter coming to terms with each other. Just as Wil (Michelle Krusiec)\, a harried young surgical resident\, begins a promising romance with the flirtatious dancer Vivian (Lynn Chen)\, her life is turned upside down when her more traditional Chinese mother (Joan Chen) – unwed and unexpectedly pregnant – moves in with her\, forcing both women to confront the generational and cultural barriers that have long troubled their relationship. Both embracing and cleverly subverting rom-com conventions\, Wu delivers a bighearted ode to the Chinese American diaspora\, and the liberating joy of living one’s truth. \nPresented in English and Mandarin with English subtitles. \n \nLaura McVey \nLaura McVey is a librarian\, writer\, and lifelong cinephile. She was born and raised in Hamilton\, and earned a Liberal Arts degree at the University of Waterloo and a Masters of Library and Information Science from the University of Western Ontario. Laura is passionate about making connections through the medium of film\, and hopes that the Rainbow Reels series will help expose filmgoers to queer stories from all over the world.
